Treatment & prevention

Varying stages of melanoma, needs different approaches of treatment. Most treatments are directed to lessen or shrink the tumor and its progressive symptoms. Visible complication of melanoma if not treated could be damaged of deep tissues, hair loss, pain, nausea and spreading of melanoma to other body organs making it more fatal.

The following descriptive procedures and method are usually used in treating melanoma:

1.Skin Biopsy The removal of 1-2 mm surrounding skin tissue to include the dermal and dermal layers of the skin to determine the thickness of the diseases.

2.Surgery This is the standard procedure when there is a presence of metastic disease with wide local excision of 1-2 cm. It’s objective is to lessen the recurrence of the disease at the areas of its original area of lesion.

3.Adjuvant treatment This treatment are usually applied to high risk melanomas.
4.Chemotherapy This treatment is only applied to patients whose immune system recognizes melanoma metastasis. It uses drugs to kill cancer cells, may be by mouth or injection. Another method is Isolated limb perfusion where drugs are put directly to its bloodstream. However, a patient undergoing chemotherapy may experience hair loss, poor appetite, vomit, nausea and sore lips. Blood cell function may be low, and may likely to be exposed with infections.

5.Radiation therapy This is often used for patients with advances melanoma or distant metastasis. It uses high energy rays to kill cancer cells by using radioactive machines that directs to the body . Effects can be fatigue to patients who are going through in this therapy.
6.Targeted therapy A type of treatment that uses substances to identify and attack specific cancer cells without damaging or destroying normal cells.Typical example is Monoclonal antibody therapy is a cancer treatment that uses antibodies that can identify substances on cancer cells or normal substances that may help cancer cells grow. The antibodies attach to the substances and kill the cancer cells, block their growth, or keep them from spreading..

Stages Treatment
I Minor surgery
II Lymp node mapping and sentinel biopsy, surgery and skin grafting to cover the wound or adjuvant therapy
III Surgery, removal of lymph nodes and skin grafting, chemotherapy
IV Surgery to remove lymph nodes, radio therapy, immuno therapy, and chemotherapy to relieve symptoms
